Why The Small But Mighty Savennières Should Be on Your Radar

June 1, 2020

Forbes contributor Lana Bortolot is hoping to open readers’ eyes up to Savennières, a small and under-the-radar region in the Loire Valley producing high quality, mineral-driven Chenin Blanc. Bortolot highlights Domaines de Baumard as one of the most respected estates in the region and speaks with Florent Baumard about the history of the property and VINTUS’s own Patrick Will about the proliferation of styles of Savennières.

Domaine des Baumard Clos du Papillon 2015 and Domaine des Baumard Savennieres 2016 are recommended as two exemplary expressions of wine from this variety. When describing the Clos du Papillon Savennières, the writer adds “Like the butterfly adorning its bottle, this is a wine that takes flight: fresh, mineral-driven, white pear and green plum. Pretty texture—slight but not too heavy creaminess.” In comparison, the Savennières offers “More white and green fruit notes (pear, apple) with a touch of almond skin. Classic wet-stone minerality.”
